The Big Blue Information Skills Toolkit and Information Skills Post-16 Toolkit
The Big Blue Project examined information skills (IS) training in FE and HE. The project worked to produce a blueprint for the future of information skills training by gaining a snapshot of provision around the country and identifying a variety of methods of good practice. Two toolkits were produced to support colleges and universities that wish to commence, or improve, existing training. The toolkits bring together some of the key deliverables that the Big Blue project produced: case studies, literature reviews and interpretations of Key Skills requirements.
The Information Skills Toolkit is web-based and divided into nine sections, each of which relates to a key feature of a successful information skills programme. Each section contains an explanation of the aspect that it covers, plus findings of the project's audit and links to relevant case studies and Web resources.
The post-16 toolkit takes statements directly from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) Key Skills specifications for the IT and Communications units and then places them in an IS context by including information on how the statements can be interpreted in practice and examples from the case studies. Comments on the Key Skills Support Programme are also included. This can be useful when Learning Resources Centre staff are looking for opportunities to integrate information skills into the curriculum. Printable versions of the toolkits are also available.
DEVISE: A framework for the evaluation of an enquiry based evaluation of internet search engines
The aim of the DEVISE project was to develop and present a framework for the evaluation of internet search engines with emphasis being placed on a user-centred perspective. This final project report reviews existing information retrieval systems and outlines the process by which the framework for the evaluation of information retrieval systems was constructed based on the dimensions of the task. The report outlines criteria on which the project team developed a set of user satisfaction measures with systems task support.
EQUINOX, Library Performance Measurement and Quality Management System
The Equinox project expanded on existing performance indicators for libraries to include those for the electronic library environment. The project ran from 1998-2000. This is the project website which also includes a set of performance measurement indicators.
Evaluation of Public Library Online Services: Measuring Impact
This is a paper outlining approaches to the measurement of the impact of networked public library services. It also considers the impact of ICT and the role of public library services on learning.
A website providing advice and guidance on engaging learners in the learning process with Information Learning Technologies. A model for engaging learners is provided but perhaps of most use and interest is the store cupboard. A searchable and categorised database containing all of Ferl's downloadable teaching and learning materials. The site also includes, lesson plans and case studies.
HyLiFe was part of the E-Lib (Electronic Library) suite of projects and ran from Janaury 1998 to December 2000. The Project was concerned with the integrated delivery of print and electronic (hybrid) services likely to be required of higher education libraries in the foreseeable future. The Hylife toolkit has been designed as a practical guide and information resource for those creating, implementing and managing hybrid library services in their organisations. The toolkit covers the following areas: an explanation of the hybrid library concept and the information landscape, the issues relating to the management of hybrid libraries such as copyright and data protection, scalability and sustainability and evaluation, users of the hybrid library and information skills provision, content and interface design issues.
Pedagogical Roles and Implementation Guidelines for Online Communication Tools
A study conducted to investigate the use of online communication tools in HE. The study investigated how 12 tutors teaching various 'Introduction to the Humanities' courses utilised asynchronous discussion tools and how the use of such technology added value to the teaching and learning process. The findings from the study are presented as a set of guidelines that may be used or adapted as a tool by lecturers wishing to use discussion tools in their own teaching.
Performance Management Indicators
This survey was developed by the Council for Learning Resources in Colleges (COLRIC) to identify performance and impact indicators that reflected the objectives and activities of college learning resource services to assist colleges with planning. The indicators are focused on five specific areas - service usage, user attitudes to satisfaction, user-service interface (quality control), finding and using information and integration of the LRS with curriculum delivery in the college.
The Castle Toolkit
This is an online authoring tool that allows tutors and managers to create interactive assessments for use on the web without any prior knowledge of HTML. The Castle Toolkit is freely available to the education community and is hosted by the University of Leicester.
Trial and Evaluation of Roundtable Methodology and Flashlight Program
The aim of this project was to evaluate whether or not the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE) Teaching and Learning Technology (TLT) Roundtable methodologies for improving the use of technology in teaching would transfer effectively to a UK environment.
This site provides a wealth of information for the marketing of online centres such as libraries, voluntary organisations and colleges. Each step of the knowledge bank is broken down into easy to navigate sections and most sections include a checklist as well as guidance, advice and case studies on marketing related topics such as using advertising to publicise your centre.
