A Framework for Pedagogical Evaluation of Virtual Learning Environments File 282 K 03/12/2003 This report provides two models for evaluating VLEs from a pedagogic perspective. The first is concerned with how to evaluate the properties, capabilities and orientation of different systems from an educational perspective. The second is concerned with determining whether the new technology can be embedded into the teaching and learning context of a given institution. These models (one from education, the other from systems modelling) are offered as a basis for constructing a pedagogical evaluation methodology for VLEs. The educational model is Laurillard's Conversational Framework. The organisational model is Beer's Viable Systems Model.

This is supported by the use of widely recognised standards such as XML, IMS and SQL. We have tested extending the scope of this client to searching our Institutional Finance System (this is from the same vendor as the QLS system, but the principle is that it is an SQL database that can be registered with MS Windows NT, as an ODBC/ADO database).

Delivering Staff and Professional Development Using Virtual Learning Environments File 171 K 03/12/2003 There is a critical need for large-scale staff and professional development in the UK Higher Education sector, as identified by the Dearing report and others. The Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ILT) has been established as the professional body for higher education staff involved in teaching and learning. Staff will gain membership of ILT through development of portfolios of their teaching practice and through accredited training and development courses. In future, it is expected that all new lecturing staff will be required to undergo some accredited training in order to complete their probation (this might be linked to associate membership of the ILT). Greater formalisation of Teaching and Learning skills will require an expansion in staff and professional development provision at HE institutions. Such large-scale professional development would benefit from a wider range of delivery strategies, which are effective, flexible and efficient. Online delivery of staff and professional development offers a solution that provides the flexibility and scalability required. Online delivery can complement face-to-face delivery or may entirely replace it.

Laying the Foundation for Web Services over Legacy Systems File 418 K 03/12/2003 As the use of the World Wide Web becomes more pervasive within our society, businesses and institutions are required to migrate a wide range of services to the web. Difficulties arise where there are requirements to integrate existing systems within the migrated and oftenextended web based services. The Institutionally Secure Integrated Data Environment (INSIDE) project is addressing the problems and issues surrounding the development and delivery of web based services for "joined up systems" for institutions within Higher Education (HE). The project is working with a variety of existing information systems, e.g. student record systems and managed learning environments, at two universities. To better understand the requirements for an integrated web based service, a common business process, the registration of new undergraduate students, has been analysed and modelled at both sites. Progressing from initial informal models to more formal models in a systematic way, following a meta-process incorporating good practice from domain analysis and requirements engineering has allowed the project to lay the foundation for its development of web-based services.

Teaching, Learning and Technology Group (TLT Group) Link 1 K 12/08/2009 The Teaching, Learning and Technology Group (TLT Group) is a not-for-profit that supports about 130 institutions of higher education around the world. The TLT Group's mission is to help educators improve teaching and learning using available technology; it does this by providing training, resources, tools, consulting, and other services. The TLT Group is distinctive because, rather than focusing on technology per se, its services support improvements in professional development; productive feedback (assessment, evaluation), collaboration across boundaries, and planning. For example, its materials on the 'seven principles of good practice in undergraduate education' are widely used in professional development. The TLT Group puts special stress on teaching and organizational innovations that are easy to adopt, and on incremental, long-term strategies for dealing with stubborn problems. The TLT Group is especially well-known for the work of its Flashlight Program on evaluation and assessment.

A Framework for Information Architecture Link 1 K 13/12/2005 With increasing size and complexity of the implementations of information systems, it is necessary to use some logical construct (or architecture) for defining and controlling the interfaces and the integration of all of the components of the system. This paper defines information systems architecture by creating a descriptive framework from disciplines quite independent of information systems, then by analogy specifies information systems architecture based upon the neutral, objective framework. Also, some preliminary conclusions about the implications of the resultant descriptive framework are drawn. The discussion is limited to architecture and does not include a strategic planning methodology.
