If you are thinking of re-structuring, introducing change (perhaps by way of increasing use of ILT), or implementing a new information system then it is important that you understand what really happens in your organisation. Incremental changes over the years may have left processes no longer matching the needs of modern learners. Previous re-structures may have left responsibility and authority dangerously apart. Don't just believe the Procedure Manual; find out what really happens - the JISC infoNet way.

Process Review is the term used when an organisation undertakes an analysis of what it does, how it does it and why, with a view to improvement in terms of benefits to clients and/or profits. In the education sector, Process Review might be undertaken to improve efficiency and effectiveness. A Learner-Centred approach puts the learner at the heart of the review by focussing on the benefits to learners of each and every activity undertaken by the institution.

Target Audience

The day is aimed at senior and middle managers of cross-college and administrative functions in Further Education Colleges or Higher Education Institutions. No prior knowledge is assumed although the event is suitable for staff with previous experience as well as beginners. Organisations often find it beneficial to send a range of staff from different departments and group discounts are available.

Outcomes

The workshop will be an interactive day aiming to give delegates an introduction to, or raised levels of knowledge of, a variety of process review considerations, techniques and tools. At the end of the workshop delegates will be able to use a variety of simple and rapid approaches to improve processes for the benefit of their learners.

The following areas will be covered:

  • Why look at Processes? - Improving service, ensuring processes fit your organisational strategies
  • Principles of Process Review - Client focus, cost benefits
  • Fundamental Themes - Introspection, problem solving, creative and lateral thinking
  • Possible Outputs - Re-structuring, challenging, continuous improvement and mastering change
  • Obstacles to Process Restructuring - Achieving commitment, identifying and overcoming obstruction and cultural barriers
  • Process Analysis - Process Mapping, IDEF0 and RAEW analysis, swim lanes
  • Process Dysfunction - Identify the process anti-patterns
  • Process Design & Implementation - Managing transition, evaluation and testing, Business Process Re-Engineering

The content will be flexible to enable the workshop to be matched to the needs of delegates.
