2011 Information Legislation & Management survey
Practitioners may also be interested to know that we are currently considering the benefits of producing a freely available Excel-based tool for logging requests received and relevant information relating to them. The intention is that this tool could not only be used for internal tracking and monitoring of requests within the institution but would contain all the information required by the survey and could be submitted at the end of each year in lieu of a survey return.
We are keen to work with the sector in developing this tool and would be interested to hear from you if you would like to be involved as part of a working group.
For further information on the survey, or to register your interest in being part of the proposed working group please contact Teresa Tocewicz, Researcher/Analyst, JISC infoNet.
The annual JISC infoNet Information Legislation & Management survey, produced in association with Universities UK and GuildHE represents the only means the sector has of discovering whether such cases represent isolated examples, or are indicative of a more significant trend affecting a far greater number of institutions. Through the survey we are able to ascertain who it is that is asking for what and by doing so to start to understand some of the factors driving current patterns- and, possibly, to help predict and prepare for future ones. Even more significantly, the breadth and depth of the questions asked, enables us to look beyond the numbers and to start to assess their impact on institutional operations, including an indication of how much resource it may be consuming and where the areas are in which investment or improvement could help reduce the overall impact of compliance.
The survey for 2011 will be the seventh consecutive year that this survey has been run. Thus, not only will the data returned represent a valuable 'point in time' snapshot but will also form the latest instalment of a steadily emerging longitudinal picture which becomes more informative each year.
In line with feedback received from the sector we are launching this year's survey earlier than usual, to give practitioners the opportunity to start compiling their returns in the run up to the Christmas break.
Research project
JISC infoNet is looking for participants for a research project on calculating the resources required to respond to FOI requests within HEIs.

Survey frequently asked questions
Is it possible to download an offline copy of the questions?
Yes, download the PDF. This is for reference only - surveys can not be submitted in this format.
Can I leave the survey half way through and return to complete it at a later date?
Yes, but only if you are using the same computer and web browser throughout.
Do I have to answer every question in the survey?
No. We are aware that we ask for a lot of information about the requests received and that not all institutions will capture all the data we would ideally like. We also appreciate the time it takes to complete the survey and the pressure many practitioners are under. We have deliberately made the vast majority of questions within the survey 'optional' making it possible for you to miss out any questions you are unwilling or unable to answer. However, in order for the survey results to be as comprehensive and useful as possible we would obviously appreciate it if as much data as possible is provided.
