Success Factors

What Makes The Space Successful?

Library Northumbria University Basement area

The basement and first floor areas were designed by Architectural Technology placement student Ryan Bird who brought a strong student voice together with his subject knowledge to the team.

The variety of facilities (noisy/quiet areas, different layouts and types of furniture) together with the hybrid nature of the library means that students find a space that is right for them at that time.

Library Northumbria University

The technology is where the students want to study.

The library is in the centre of the City Campus so it is close to the Students' Union and to Student Services, as well as their School buildings. It juxtaposes a range of study environments and technologies with the necessary support. Opening hours are designed to reflect student needs and can easily be adapted to 24x7.

The changes are the result of student feedback - the students are listened to and they can see the results of their suggestions. 'The environment is totally different and far more conducive to learning, encompassing everything ranging from the lighting and the ventilation to the staff support and opening times' - Spike Reid, Students' Union President.

What Is Innovative About The Design And The Use Of The Space?

The range of facilities and innovative use of technology fully supports the changing requirements of the 21st century learners. It demonstrates what can be achieved with existing estate and limited timeslots for major works.

If you can read this text, it means you are not experiencing the Plone design at its best. Plone makes heavy use of CSS, which means it is accessible to any internet browser, but the design needs a standards-compliant browser to look like we intended it. Just so you know ;)
