| Type of Project: | Refurbishment of 5000m2 three storey building first opened in 2003 as a library and IT service with both services operating largely separately from the building. From its opening it became apparent that the upper floors were being used to their full potential but the ground floor had potential for further development. The institution wanted to maximise the use and impact of the whole building providing more IT and learning facilities as well as bringing together the Library and IT staff in a converged service. |
| Start/End Date: | First meeting to discuss the project took place on 1st April 2011 and while some minor works and equipment installation were still ongoing all works to fabric and infrastructure of the building were completed at JISC infoNet's time of visiting, 27th September 2011. |
Background & Context
What was the context of the development?
It was a refurbishment of a building first opened in 2003. Anecdotal evidence and feedback from staff and students, both locally and from the National Student Survey (NSS), suggested that as a library it was not the heartbeat of the campus it should have been and as a building it was quite unevenly used and perceived (eg the 3rd floor was an area that was often showcased while the rest of the building was not fully utilised).
Whilst the facility was popular with students consultation revealed that there was the need for more group learning spaces and improved IT facilities in the building. The building provided a sound infrastructure of the building within which new facilities could be developed.
The arrival of a new Vice-Chancellor and other new members of the Senior Management Team provided the impetus for the project, which was sponsored and led by the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Resources). The goals for the project were to:
- find ways to improve Learning and Teaching and the student experience taking it from good to exceptional
- use the project as a catalyst to support strategic change by bringing the Library and IT staff together in a combined office
- Increase the Library resources and number of computers available
- Improve the wired and wireless networks in the building
- rethink the service and support offered in the building
- develop the 'wow' factor of the building making it the learning heart of the campus
It was agreed that any improvements to the Fountains Learning Centre would be beneficial to students across all faculties and any spending should be carried out with that in mind. The project was initiated by Pro Vice Chancellor David Chesser who ensured that not only was it completed within the tight timescale but also that during the work the existing library and learning facilities remained operational. A process of consultation and careful project planning ensured that the completed project met the needs of the service providers as well as students and embodied the vision and strategy of the institution.
What is it?
A learning space which is the base of operations for Library and IT staff. It offers a library facility, a variety of IT provision both in situ and available to loan, a mixture of social learning space, individual work stations, as well as spaces for silent, quiet and group work, with a variety of flexible modular furniture that allows the space to be moulded to suit the needs of the user.
What happens in the space?
Facility available to staff and students to carry out research and work individually and in groups in an informal and flexible environment. Individual work spaces and larger group meeting spaces are available on all floors. IT and Library staff are able to work alongside users to support them and help find solutions to any issues.
