Assessing Information Needs Survey Results

In April 2010 JISC infoNet ran an extremely successful 'Information Needs Analysis' survey as part of our Strategic Management Information programme. The survey was designed to obtain a clear picture of what questions senior institutional management most want to be able to answer in order to fulfil the responsibilities of their position.

Designed to build upon and complement this work, we are now embarking on a parallel research strand with the focus this time on business intelligence systems: the means by which many institutions are seeking to provide senior decision makers and others access to the very same accurate, timely and complete information which our previous survey has already indicated they need.

The focus of this business intelligence survey is therefore more technical and detailed and is designed to obtain a snapshot of the current state of maturity of such systems within the sector; what their nature and scope is, and to identify some of the issues which may be affecting their ability to meet the needs of their intended users.

This survey is therefore likely to be of interest to IT professionals, institutional planners, information managers and any other staff involved in current or planned projects to implement and maintain a business intelligence system; regardless of whether or not they completed the first survey.

The survey results, along side its predecessor, will be used to set the parameters for further more detailed research within the sector; the results of which will be available from the autumn, as well as forming the basis for further publications, guidance material and dissemination events.

JISC infoNet is taking forward a major new programme that aims to assess the management information needs of senior institutional managers to ensure informed, evidence-based decision-making.

This programme is seeking to identify:

  • what the information requirements of senior managers are

  • how technology may be able to help

  • where exemplars of good practice currently exist

  • why barriers to making progress in this area may exist

  • what can be done to overcome them
